The ragtag but always more-literary-than-the-competition Okkervil River has finally settled into a nice dad-rock groove with their first release for Dave Matthews' label. Will Sheff is put in the soul man's spotlight for shuffling opener "It Was My Season." Finding a comfy middle ground between the power-pop of The Stand Ins and the cranked-up folk fog of Black Sheep Boy, they bring in horns for "On a Balcony" and Springsteen keyboards for "Down Down the Deep River." "Stay Young" gets even more synthesized, but mainly this is a band learning how to explore without deviating too much.
