About Not Breathing
At the center of Not Breathing's sonic maelstrom, Dave Wright and a host of guest artists trigger acoustic instruments, keyboards, samplers and electronic instruments of his own devising that envelop the room in chaotic sounds brought to order. NB tracks are patently electronic, buzzing with mis-directed electricity, pitting digital against analog. But the form his sounds take are nearly biological -- they could be the sounds produced by a digestive tract or a microphone penetrating flesh. Vague melodies and intense textures range from the delicacy of water dripping from a stalactite into a cave pool to an adrenaline-provoking rush of noise. Through these alien textures, the only familiar sounds come from corrupted voices forced through obliterating filters, and the beatbox and hand percussion that emits jabbing breaks and tribal rhythms. Wright creates a tension between sounds that inspire your worst fears to rise out of your subconscious and sounds that are akin to the calm light at the end of the tunnel described by people who have had a near-death experience.
