Newworldaquarium is the principal alias of Jochem Peteri, a Dutch techno producer who also records as Newworldromantic and Ross 154. Since he began recording in 2000, Peteri has released music on Peacefrog, Planet E and New Religion, but he's most closely affiliated with Amsterdam's Delsin label. Like much Dutch house and techno, Newworldaquarium's music is heavily indebted to Detroit techno, with sturdy 4/4 rhythms and swirling synthesizers reminiscent of Carl Craig and Moodymann. In 2000, Peteri became famous for "Trespassers," a moody, slow-motion anthem that's often cited as one of the finest techno cuts of the decade. While he may never surpass that achievement, his material since then -- including 2007's The Dead Bears, his lone album to date -- has remained crucial listening for fans of analog synths, sluggish beats and hypnotic repetition.
