About New Orleans Nightcrawlers
The New Orleans Nightcrawlers are here to show you that New Orleans music didn't die with Dixieland; like the gumbo for which the town is famous, it incorporates whatever ingredients you put into it. The music of New Orleans has undeniably changed with the advent of soul, Funk, and R&B, and like the Dirty Dozen, the 'Crawlers incorporate all these influences into the old-time brass band format. The music is a mix of traditional Dixieland tunes and newer material, and the beats will simply throw you for a loop in their diversity -- they play two-beat Dixieland, four-beat Swing, and gutbucket Funk with equal ease. And have you ever heard a tuba play a walking bassline at a Bop tempo? The harmonies range from chunky block chords and raucous collective improvisation on the up-tempo numbers to subtle intervals and muted tones on the ballads. The band's command of dynamics and intonation knows few peers, with the horn section swelling and subsiding as a single unit.
