On Shattered, Matisyahu drops a preview of what's to come on his 2009 release Light -- and if these four songs are indication, it's somewhere between self-reinvention and an identity crisis. He's got Stephen MacGregor (Freddie's son) producing the wicked cool "Smash Lies," with its Ratatat-style guitars and stuttering urban beats. Then he emulates Weezer on "So Hi So Lo" before delving into extremely restrained Sly & Robbie territory on the final two tracks. It's an odd but impeccably produced collection, even if it leaves you asking "Will the real Matisyahu please stand up?"
