Label: Last Gang Records
On her third effort, Lindi Ortega follows the same backward-looking/forward-thinking path that endeared her to fans of old-timey country music with a modern spin. Ortega walks assuredly here, with the jump-blues number "Voodoo Mama" and the rockabilly-kissed "Gypsy Child." But it's the slower, somber cuts that offer the brightest glimpse into her world. "Lived and Died Alone" is made sadder by her whispery vocals and stark orchestration. In "Something for You," Ortega repeatedly sings "I don't need you to love me," but her soft, quavering vocals betray her true feelings. It's a stunner.
