The Truth finds Ledisi re-energizing her sound after 2011's too-placid Pieces of Me. She kicks off "Like This" with a scratched snippet of Slick Rick's "La Di Da Di" and a funky drummer beat; "Rock with You" and "I Blame You" have a light disco groove; and "Anything," which has flowery synthesizer lines, is the closest she's gotten to contemporary R&B in ages. These elements distract from neither the gospel-strong voice that she unleashes on the title track, nor the storytelling lyrics that adorn "88 Boxes" and "Can't Help Who You Love." She sounds invigorated here.
