Released:
Label: Brainfeeder
The output of Flying Lotus' Brainfeeder label is often called "beat music," but it's just as much about the stuff between the beats -- the spray of downy textures and pastel tones that rises like shimmering waves of dust motes between the thumps. That's particularly true of the debut album from the U.K.'s Lapalux, in which hip-hop beats provide the splintered frame for a liquid wash of synths and warped voices that undulates like a '60s light show. But Lapalux has a deeper pop sensibility than his label mates, resulting in jams both abstracted and hummable.
