Released:
Label: Nettwerk Records
After 2010's best-of compilation, Ladytron return with their fifth studio album. All that reminiscing must have made them reflective, as this is a dark, brooding album; even comparatively danceable numbers like "Melting Ice" are shadowy and nervous. As lush as their sonics can be, there's also something forbidding about them. "Ritual" is terse new wave, part Cars and part Cure; suffused in reverb, "White Gold" has the whiff of freezer burn. With the three closing songs, the clouds part somewhat, and shades of trance, the Cocteau Twins and the Caribbean impart a reassuringly rosy glow.
