Loggins' second solo album, 1978's Nightwatch, features the singer's first bona fide classic, a No. 5 hit duet with Stevie Nicks, "Whenever I Call You 'Friend.'" Also of note is "What a Fool Believes," a song Loggins wrote with Michael McDonald that many folks might recognize as one of the Doobie Brothers' biggest hits. With "Easy Driver" and a boogie-ing cover of "Down in the Boondocks," Loggins shows he's not totally divorced from the folk-rock leanings of Loggins & Messina here, as he carves out his spot as the blue-eyed soul/lite-rock late-'70s superstar he'd become.
