About Jelly Roll Kings
A classic juke joint trio playing on the recently revived Delta Blues scene. First appearing in 1979 on Rockin the Juke Joint Down, they now reside at Fat Possum records -- the current home of so much great blues. Something of a supergroup, they're composed of big shot guitarist and shouter Jack Johnson, harmonica and keyboard player Frank Frost and drummer Sam Carr (the son of Robert Nighthawk). All are well known in their own right and as a band the three meld together like one sweating, pulsating beast. Their beefed-up version of Delta Blues rocks in a deep groove, plowing along like a steamroller with Johnson splitting off slanted leads and Frost alternating between playful Garage Rock squiggle and Billy Preston-style Funk. This is a Modern Blues band with the same rustic sensibility of R.L. Burnside and T-Model Ford, but Jelly Roll Kings are a little bit more uptown than those guys, grooving where T-Model overpowers and having fun where R.L. gets mean-spirited. The fact is, everything Fat Possum puts out is the best music for anyone with an ear for old Howlin' Wolf and early John Lee Hooker. Jelly Roll Kings are no different.
