Label: MODE
Mode Records continues its Cage Edition series with organist Gary Verkade. Fans of John Cage know how his music could be beautiful; newcomers only aware of the composer's reputation for conceptual riddles and chaos might be stunned to hear the gorgeous "Harmony of Maine" (see track 4 in particular). "Souvenir" is also pretty, but with some pranks inserted. And the performance of "Organ 2/ASLSP" (that is, "as slow as possible") may not be as deliberate as the 639-year version currently going down at a church in Germany, but it's still got a Buddhistic sense of eternal-calm-as-bliss.
