Released:
Label: Temporary Residence Ltd.
The post-rock instrumentalists' seventh effort (arguably eleventh -- they’ve been doing a lot of soundtracks) trades swelling, ebbing guitar bombast for sparer and largely electronic soundscapes, marking the band's biggest sonic shift to date. But it's a difference in tools, not in style: A new wick and matches to ignite the same slow burn. The title track's brooding overture and the ocean-sized synth washes of “Logic of a Dream,” find the Texans giving electronica maximalists like M83 a run for their francs, while “Disintegration Anxiety” and “Losing the Light” graft a new anxiety to the old majestic build.
