Label: Anti/Epitaph
There has always been a marked discrepancy between Dr. Dog the live band and Dr. Dog the recording unit. The former is sloppy and vital, the latter measured and painstakingly nostalgic. Be The Void is the group's attempt to reconcile this split. They succeed in spots, like the rickety jams "Lonesome" and "Warrior Man." But even when they sound like they're letting it rip in-studio, their songs clearly are products of a hyper-historical understanding of rock music. Not unlike fellow Philadelphian Todd Rundgren, Dr. Dog are record-collecting musicians deeply in love with pop pastiche.
