About David Binney
Dave Binney's the kind of jazz musician that refuses to be pigeonholed. His sound palette ranges from satin-smooth Latin jazz to angular avant-garde composition, with plenty of seamless yet mind-bending Post Bop improvisation. He even approaches Smooth Jazz, but never crosses the line into elevator territory; some of his tunes bear an uncanny resemblance to Dave Matthews' early ballad work. A hard core Free Jazz nut might be appalled at this blatant, nay, obscene display of melody. But Binney doesn't care: He plays what sounds good to him. And Binney's got plenty of New York Downtown cred: he's played with everyone from avant-Fusion drummer Bobby Previte to M-BASE lunatic guitarist David Gilmore. He's enlisted solid lineups of local New York musicians for his various projects, and it's paid off; they sail through the often-tricky material without breaking a sweat.
