Given permission to raid Sir Paul McCartney's stock of Broadway tunes, Zanes steps to the challenge: Can he transform even show-tune bombast into shambling, low-key folk? Apparently so. Zanes has called 76 Trombones a Broadway album for people who don't relate to Broadway, and it plays like that; though he chooses his covers well, he also gives them makeovers -- only the melodies make it out alive. Everything else is toned down and mussed up, whether it's Carol Channing's doddering voice on "Hello Dolly!" or the Annie hallmark "You're Never Fully Dressed Without A Smile."
