Cold War Kids have gone the way of Kings of Leon, slicking up their sound into pop-rock nuggets primed for radio and romantic comedies. It's not such a bad spot for any band to find itself in, and vocalist Nathan Willett has the sort of affective, soulful howl that could easily battle Matchbox 20's Rob Thomas in the game of heartstring tugging. But it also means a lot of the raw punch that resonated so well on their past two albums has been sacrificed -- though not entirely: see the minimalist "Sensitive Kid" and "Cold Toes on the Cold Floor," a bluesy Black Keys-like rocker.
