Black continued to hit his stride with his third record. It wasn't quite the chart success that his first two had been, but right off the bat, "We Tell Ourselves" hits on the perfect prescription that made "Killin' Time" a new-country classic. Released amid legal turmoil, the album successfully straddles the gap between commercial viability and authentic country, with the focus on the former, for better or for worse. That said, the lead guitar play is hot throughout and "Something to Cry About" alone makes up for Billy Ray Cyrus (1992 was the year of "Achy Breaky Heart").
