Born to Run was Springsteen's third album, yet it might as well have been his first. This is when his legend as The Boss really begins. He and the E Street Band unleash rock and roll every bit as cacophonous as rush hour traffic in the Holland Tunnel: sprawling wordplay, banging pianos, blaring horns, walloping grooves and ringing guitars all piled atop one another with Spectorian splendor. Damn near every tune -- "Backstreets," "She's the One" the nearly 10-minute "Jungleland," and, of course, that iconic title track, a genuine blast of orgiastic magnificence -- is a working-class operetta.
