Released:
Label: East West Records Uk Ltd
Birdy's third album represents a bold leap in evolution. Where her first two spotlighted the innocently sparkling soprano of a singer/songwriter barely in her teens, Beautiful Lies reflects the sound of a young woman whose voice has grown deeper, richer and more knowing with time and experience. Not only that, her music has become significantly more complex, emotionally and in terms of composition. On the aptly titled "Growing Pains," as well as the ruminative love ballad "Wild Horses," Birdy's swelling vocals are framed by artful arrangements of piano, strings and Lorde-style beats that are robust and anthemic -- yet never bombastic. As with previous efforts, Beautiful Lies features a handful of collaborations with high profile songwriters, Teddy Geiger and Steve Mac among them. But maybe the most successful is "Words," which finds Birdy teaming up with Australian tunesmith Conrad Sewell to deliver a soulfully mesmerizing heartbreaker wrapped in retro '80s lushness.
