Jam Rock's Greatest Hits

Jam Rock's Greatest Hits

The nagging (and frequently dismissive) misconception most novices and outsiders harbor regarding the jam-band scene is that it consists of nothing more than Grateful Dead clones reeking of patchouli. The Dead's legacy certainly does loom large (in particular their pioneering embrace of both extended improvisation and tape trading among hardcore fans), but from the time of its birth in the late '60s to now, jam rock has always boasted a genuinely diverse assortment of flavors: everything from bluegrass to jazz-funk, progressive rock to world music, reggae to Southern rock.

Jam Rock's Greatest Hits puts this diversity front and center, in the process spotlighting key selections from many of the movement's most beloved and successful artists, including Phish, Dave Matthews Band, The String Cheese Incident, Blues Traveler, Umphrey's McGee, O.A.R., Gov't Mule and Widespread Panic. What's more, our extensive playlist pays tribute to the music's iconic founders. In addition to the Dead (no surprise there, right?), we feature the mighty Allman Brothers Band, art-rock wiseacre Frank Zappa and the perpetually underrated Little Feat, who through the years have proven to be one of the scene's most durable and exploratory acts.

Now go get your jam on, all you freaky (neo) hippies!
