Descendants of The Velvet Underground

About this playlist

As the myth goes, only 30,000 people heard The Velvet Underground's alternative-inventing debut when it was released smack dab in the middle of the Summer of Love -- and all of them started a band. But what artists really owe their careers to this pioneering group? There are many obvious ones: Yo La Tengo, Galaxie 500 and The Feelies might not exist without the Velvets' warm, feedback-laden folk sound and their marriage of punk and beautiful droning dirges. Meanwhile, the New York Dolls' flat drive, R.E.M.'s jangle, The Ramones' three-chord perfection and Mott the Hoople's glam-jams were all borne of the same spark, too. Here's to The Velvet Underground and all their dedicated descendants.
