Black History Month: Afro-Latin Music

About this playlist

Black History Month is a time to remember and honor the immeasurable contributions African Americans, black culture and the history behind them have made -- an important time of homage and celebration particularly because that history has so often been obscured. In keeping with that sentiment, Napster is celebrating the significant, all-too-often overlooked, undeniably indelible mark people, cultural practices and musics of African descent have made on Latin music and life. Afro-Latin musical traditions have often been exercises in innovation and endurance, surviving and adapting in the face of extreme adversity and persecution -- and in the process, often spawning game-changing new sounds and styles. Merengue, reggaeton, salsa, Afro-Peruvian lando and Afro-Colombian champeta are just a few of the musics that have been created by Afro-Latin musicians and shaped by African and African diasporic traditions. Listen in to the rich, diverse sounds of Afro-Latin music on our playlist featuring luminaries such as Celia Cruz, Israel Cachao Lopez, Romeo Santos, El General, Susana Baca, Choc Quib Town and more!
