Teatro is a unique accomplishment, even for an artist as unique as Willie Nelson. Hooking up with producer Daniel Lanois, the country great leans on tunes written 30 years prior, creating one of his most modern records in the process. Lanois' imprint is unmistakable: warm atmospherics and artfully spare grooves echoing his work with Emmylou Harris (who contributes backing vocals here) on 1995's Wrecking Ball. Nelson's vocals have only grown more nuanced and shaded with age. On "Somebody Pick up My Pieces," listen to the way he "plays" his voice the way a great jazz saxophonist does his horn.
