Released:
Label: Warner Bros.
The Flaming Lips' second release of 2013, a six-song EP inspired by the sci-fi flick Ender's Game, is far more accessible and closer to the Lips of the Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots and Soft Bulletin era. Opener "Peace Sword (Open Your Heart)" isn't just melodic, it's almost hopeful, possibly their most uplifting tune since "Race for the Prize." Ten-minute closer "Assassin Beetle: The Dream Is Ending" brings their now-characteristic dissonance, but the tunes in between are all manner of typical Lips explorations. A nice palate cleanse from a band that doesn't always guarantee open arms.
