Released:
Label: Freerange Records
The Freerange label usually taps the deeper, jazzier side of house, but this collection of sides produced by M.I.A./Santogold producer Switch, aka Solid Groove, strips down to the naked funk of London "fidget house." Bumping drums do a skeletal herky-jerky, bass lines bubble like La Brea in its prime and there's just enough smoothness -- in the form of honeyed backing vox and hypnotic, muted loops -- to make all the rough 'n' tumble hullaboo seem almost civilized. Of course, cuts like "Just Bounce 2 This" are too freaky to be really respectable, which is exactly their charm.
