Bill Evans and Stan Getz were very different, but they were both geniuses of lyrical jazz improvisation whose lives were haunted by addictions and selfish deeds. Sometimes it seems as if they both paid penance for their actions by letting pure emotion pour out of them as they played. While their 1964 collaboration is respectable, it's this long-lost concert recording from 1974 that truly captures how in synch they were. It's hard to pick a standout cut, but the duo's heart-stoppingly beautiful reading of "The Peacocks" even bests Getz's version with composer Jimmy Rowles.
