Released:
Label: AVOW! Records
No beating around the bush: Aside from 1997's classic S.C.I.E.N.C.E., Sons of the Sea is far and away the most listenable album Brandon Boyd has ever made. This is partly because of the aesthetic, a relatively happy, post-Beatles experimental pop with piano and harmonies, lots of clever chord sequences and odd little knickknacks like glitch cut-up acoustic guitar and "Strawberry Fields"-like Mellotron. But it's also because partner Brendan O'Brien brings out Boyd's musical shrewdness. The collection falls just short of irresistible, almost 20 years into the Incubus frontman's career.
