Given the rigid, breakbeat trance rhythms of their albums since the '00s, it's easy to forget that Skinny Puppy were once genuinely funky. Subtract the swamp-zombie voices and much of 1986's Mind: The Perpetual Intercourse sounded uncannily like the robotic electronic grooves being invented half a continent away in Detroit, and like Cabaret Voltaire, Skinny Puppy were as interested in disco as they were in industrial menace. "Stairs and Flowers" anticipates Autechre's ambient B-boying, while ambient sketches suggest a sensitive side hidden behind the hellish growls.
