The cover shot may look like a still from a lost episode of Star Trek, but this was recorded in the acid rock–drenched world of 1969. Even if Crystal Illusions was a concession that Mendes was losing the youth market, he kept experimenting on his winning bossa nova–meets–American pop formula. That means that while the wonderfully soft-rock "Pretty World" and the groovy cover of "Dock of the Bay" were earning major adult-contemporary airtime, Mendes was also trying to turn on the stoners with the extended title cut (which isn't that far from what the Doors did).
