Under conductor Ludovic Morlot, this symphony has been playing more modern music. Now they have their own label to show off their skill in pieces like "Instances," one of the last orchestral works by American atonalist Elliott Carter. It's great, but the album's main course is Ives' Symphony No. 2. The way these players handle the contrasting lines for strings and horns in the Allegro -- a foreshadowing of the climax in the fifth movement -- is what stands out. Gershwin's "An American in Paris" doesn't quite fit with these pieces (outside of being by an American), but it's nice to hear.
