While many songs on Paul Weller's 2006 album As Is Now contained the compact drive and punk passion of his old band, the Jam, this 2007 single recalls that band at their most plodding and strident. An anthemic sing-along, "Wild Blue Yonder" feels like an asterisk in the middle of Weller's mid-2000s rebirth, during which his energy level suddenly matched his constant creativity. On the plus side, the tune has a nice bridge, and as always Weller's band cooks -- if only the songwriter were working at his usual level.
