Paul McCartney was commissioned to write Ocean's Kingdom by the New York City Ballet, and even though their staging was widely panned, McCartney capably writes for a large ensemble. A soft-edged work of neo-romanticism, the score take cues from genre-melding Americans of the early 20th century: Think of Bernstein's Candide or Copland's The Tender Land. And if it's not as engaging as one might hope from a Beatle, the strong moments -- like the playfully stumbling trumpet lines in "Hall of Dance" and gauzy melody of its concluding "Moonlight" -- are quite lovely.
