For all the talk of them being a progressive hip-hop group, Outkast have spent the second half of their career looking back. For 2003's The Love Below, they affected Princely, '80s funk and soul; while on "Mighty O" the ATL duo pay a visit to the Cotton Club. The leadoff single from their upcoming Idlewild Soundtrack has a ridiculously infectious swing rhythm as well as a cute chorus that borrows Cab Calloway's "hi-de-hi-de-ho." And thanks to references to President Bush and the CIA's '80s importation of crack into the ghetto, Big Boi's crunchy lines should also appeal to the Moveon.org set. Unfortunately, Andre 3000 isn't in top form after not rapping for nearly a half-decade. But, if nothing else, it's a joy to hear that hip-hop's prodigal son has returned.
