Manowar's Norse mythology fetish first appears on this, their second record, released in 1983, in "Gates of Valhalla," but also in many lyrics extolling the virtues of steel, various forms of armament and mead-raising choruses ideal for the coming Ragnarok. For its part, "Gates of Valhalla" presumably had quite an effect on a teenaged Quorthon (founder of Bathory) in Sweden when he got his hands on this. The doomy tour de force "Hatred" is easily the best song ever about eating your enemy's heart, and the video for "Gloves of Metal" must be seen to be believed.
