Lee Ranaldo is a probing artist, one who is as likely to explore freely improvised noise as he is meat-n-potatoes alternative rock. Between the Times and the Tides falls squarely into the latter camp. Not surprisingly, the album's plodding rhythms and wash of grey-matter guitar reflect Ranaldo's deep love for Neil Young/Crazy Horse and The Velvet Underground. It doesn't contain a whole lot of peaks, unfolding as it does like a subtly graded plateau. But if you're a fan of vintage indie rock, from Hüsker Dü to Sonic Youth (of course), Between the Times and the Tides will surely speak to you.
