Released:
Label: Rhino/Elektra
Kongos is a rarely celebrated rock record from the early '70s. The Happy Mondays' hit "Step On" was a cover of John Kongos' "He's Gonna Step on You Again" (yes, the original is way better). The Mondays also covered "Tokoloshe Man" (also better here). More Delaney & Bonnie than Madchester, "Jubilee Cloud" fuses psychedelic textures with gospel music. And "Come on Down Jesus" sounds like a cross between a missing Beatles song from the Let It Be sessions and a '70s teenage Jesus freak-out like the ones the kids at the freedom school sang in all those Billy Jack movies.
