If one were to create a short list of albums capturing the essence of Memphis music, it would have to include Dixie Fried. One of the unsung heroes of Southern rock and soul, Jim Dickinson (as a member of the Dixie Flyers) spent the '60s doing session work before recording this, his solo debut. Both "Wine" and the title track (a Carl Perkins tune) are roadhouse masterpieces. Meanwhile, "O How She Dances" -- a Beat poetic, carnival bark that pivots on a marching beat reaching all the way back to Congo Square -- is pure Southern bohemia. There simply aren't many records like Dixie Fried!
