Released:
Label: Hidden Beach Records (US)
From the Vault emerged out of a settlement after Jill Scott sued for release from her Hidden Beach contract. Despite its unseemly origins -- Scott eventually participated in its assembly -- this is a solid rarities collection. Some songs are better than others: The smooth neo-soul bumper "Wondering Why?" could have easily made her studio albums, while "Holding On" sounds like an extended jam session (albeit an inspired one). She unveils a deft rhyme on "The Light," while on "Wake Up Baby" and "Running Away" she explores the sadness that makes her triumphs that much sweeter.
