The title of Grasscut's debut album refers to map scale, a fitting metaphor for a record that ambles widely through English life and history. On the surface, Grasscut's Andrew Phillips and Marcus O'Dair stir up a dizzy kind of meta-pop, with hip-hop beats underpinning a joyous, psychedelic buzz, but beneath that there are scraps of 90-year-old recordings and scraps of cryptic narratives; in "1946," Phillips' mother describes the hardships of post-war food shortages, to eerie effect. It's a brightly colored cabinet of curiosities, every drawer spilling over with imaginative baubles.
