Released:
Label: 429 Records
Let's face it: The Gin Blossoms are famous because of three truly exquisite pop songs, "Hey Jealousy," "Found Out About You" and "Allison Road," all of which conquered MTV during Bill Clinton's first term. No Chocolate Cake, the band's second album since regrouping in 2002 and fifth overall, is yet another stab at recapturing the magic permeating those three tunes. Once again they don't succeed. There is some well-crafted jangle pop to be found here, though, particularly the final track, "Goin' to California," a Big Star-inspired ditty that could have been a minor hit in another era.
