Freeway has one of the most distinctive voices in hip-hop. His rasp telegraphs a certain hard-boiled urgency that sometimes teeters on desperation and violence, depending on the context of the lyrics. It's a great dynamic, but on past albums, Freeway's voice has overwhelmed the production, leaving the end product sounding shoddy. There's no such problem here. Producer Jake One has some of the hardest drums in the biz, and "One Foot In" and "Know What I Mean" absolutely bang, bringing out the best in the emcee.
