When it comes to musical gymnastics, few can compete with the prog-gods of Dream Theater. With some tracks nearing the 20-minute mark, Black Clouds starts off strong with the eerie intro and powerful chorus of the goth-inspired "A Nightmare to Remember," and "A Rite of Passage" follows in those epic footsteps with an intense guitar/synth duel. But when the album wanes into sentimental balladry ("Wither," "The Best of Times") and Broadway-caliber storytelling ("The Count of Tuscany"), it proves to be a bit over the top. Check out the bonus disc of cover songs on this special edition.
