Released:
Label: Rhino/Elektra
This 1971 set, originally slated to be a multi-LP concept album, was Dr. John's first record to chart and his last to feature his freakier psych-rock and swamp voodoo-accented sound. Very few performers know how to ride a groove like the Doctor, who slowly notches up the tension in the process. "Black John the Conqueror," "Familiar Reality" and "Pots on Fiyo" are standouts, but there isn't a bum track here.
