Long before Katrina and the oil companies kicked down New Orleans, Dr. John was leading the charge to restore the city’s surrounding protective wetlands and natural splendor. On this protest album, guests such as Willie Nelson, Eric Clapton and fellow native son Terence Blanchard join the good Dr. in railing against our greed-inspired, misguided ways (“Black Gold,” “Promises, Promises,” “Stripped Away”). Since New Orleans is in Dr. John’s blood the tunes also point out our common humanity and the possibility that we can change thing (“Keep On Goin’” and the flat-out lovely “You Might Be Surprised”).
