Label: Blue Note Records
While Donald Byrd's later crossover jazz recordings are supremely enjoyable, he was at his finest merging art with entertainment on 1960s Blue Note bop releases like Cat Walk. The underrated pianist/arranger Duke Pearson leads the session and wrote the majority of the tunes, while the Byrd-penned title track has gone on to become something of a hard bop standard. The trumpeter's interplay with baritone saxophonist Pepper Adams is a standout, as is Philly Joe Jones' drum work.
