Label: Peaceville
Darkthrone's first album after eschewing the black metal they had a hand in creating, The Cult Is Alive finds Nocturno Culto doing his finest Tom Warrior impersonation. Both Culto and drummer Fenriz play like they grew up listening to The Dead Boys instead of Venom. Fans need not worry, though, as the music is still evil as all hell and their black-metal roots are never far from the surface. Listening to the guitar playing just doesn't make your wrists hurt. "Too Old Too Cold," which could only be written by metal dudes in Norway, may be the funniest metal song ever.
