Daniel Rossen's first solo outing isn't far removed from his band Grizzly Bear's enchanting psych-pop. In fact, it's amazing this is a solo effort, what with all the intricate weaving of acoustic guitar, twangy lap-steel, moaning strings, bass-drum wallops and dirge-y piano. Songs subtly swell from simple melodies to grandiose affairs. Meanwhile, Rossen's wavering wail has the poignancy and innocence of a lost schoolboy, but his lyrics reveal a wise soul: "With your head full of stars/ That crowd all you see/ Sing for me/ With your mouth full of stones/ Grindin' your teeth/ Speak for me."
