Released:
Label: Parlophone UK
The synth-addled 1980s pop masses weren't exactly clamoring for psychedelia-flecked acoustic folk-rock, but that's what Terry Hall gave them. This excellent CD compiles all of 1985's Virgins and Philistines and eight other key singles, B-sides and extended versions. The songs still sound vital, with Hall's miserable tendencies and lyrical wit matched by sometimes jazzy, inventive retro-pop. The brilliantly brittle "Pushing Up the Daisies" and the '60s cover "Can't Get Enough of You Baby" became staples on American alternative radio, and the lovely "Hammond Song" bests the Roches' original.
