Label: Legacy Recordings
Conceptually, Ana Belén's A Los Hombres is a collection of songs by her favorite composers, including Victor Manuel, José Alfredo Jiménez and Joan Manuel Serratt, among others. But perhaps unsurprisingly, given just which "Hombres que ame" we're talking about here, what this album is really about is romance. Belén's smoky vocals float in and out of love songs in a wide range of candlelit musical languages: flute-driven jazz, sax-y dinner music, mature pop-rock, even bits of flamenco, much of it just barely on this side of smooth jazz. "La Banda"'s kitschy-cute eclecticism is the most winning.
